lazy sunday afternoons

another bulk entry. lots to get through – have been neglecting my feeds this week (because i have been knee-deep in plaster fun! yay!) so uhhh, took me sometime to sort out my little list here. quite a few cross-genre bits here too so lots of goodies for everyone!

HISTYLEY DOT COM @ DYT

http://designyoutrust.com/2010/08/25/los-angeles-street-style-from-histyley/ and http://www.histyley.com/

so this is a collection of random shots taken on the streets of LA to showcase people’s style. the fashion side of it doesn’t interest me so much, more the kinda “snapshot/polaroid” type idea behind it and the fact that no matter how interesting the main subject of the photo appears to be, i am always drawn to check out what’s going on behind them in the background. well worth a look for the photographer/voyeur!

TATTOOED PIN UPS @ DYT

first of all, tattoos. WEE! secondly, mucha. best damn idea ever. i wish i had done that instead of getting what i have. definitely definitely definitely worth a peek if you’re keen on 50s pinups or tattoos (obviously if you’re into both it’s a double-whammy of yum) <3

TINY BOX PEOPLE BY ANTON DANG @ NEATORAMA

i could spend hours examining these. the concept that something so simple (a cardboard box) could be made into a miniscule little being with feelings and friends is too awesome for words. i want a collection of these, like a family. imagine what a talking point it would be to have a group of these little guys sitting on your coffee table or dining table when you had people around! :D

THE BUGGE @ DYT

http://designyoutrust.com/2010/08/25/bugge

so, i don’t have kids. and to be honest they kind of annoy me. i seem to have a really low tolerance for unexpected noise, and children are way too good at making wicked little noises that scare the living hell out of me. BUT if i did have kids, or many small people living in my house, i would invest in one of these. modular living for kids furniture = ummmm how has no one done this before? seriously. the smartest idea in the world. first it’s a modern rocking horse, then it’s a tubelike climby thing, then it’s a lay-around-and-read-our-book type arrangement. the possibilities! and so easy to store in a small space. i love it.

JAMES C CHRISTENSEN @ LINES & COLORS

typically i’m not a fan of huge detail and renaissance type palettes and lots of sort of blown out surreal scenes, but this might be the exception to the rule. something in these images reminds me of when i was a kid. someone bought me the most expensive book i’ve ever owned – it was a “find the thing” type book with hugely detailed scenes on each page and you had to find like, the ant. or something. a style i now find highly agitating as i seem to have less patience the older i get – but at the time, it was like walking in a wonderland. the theme was wild/zoo animals and some of these images – particularly the one with the boat – feel like a direct take from that book. (i feel like i should be scouring the images to find the hidden “thing”). very very cool. props to anyone who has the patience and feeling to make something this detailed and beautiful.

POST-APOCALYPTIC TOKYO @ PINK TENTACLE

http://pinktentacle.com/2010/08/post-apocalyptic-tokyo-scenery/ and http://ameblo.jp/tokyogenso/

Post-apocalyptic Tokyo, illustration by Tokyo Genso --

clearly, i am obsessed with all things japan/tokyo. but these images take it to a whole new place. again, not a favourite medium of mine (photoshopped fantasy scenes), but it’s hard to look at these and not feel a sense of realism and/or desperation. equally, this is a pretty good-looking apocalypse arrangement. take me there!

WORDS OF WISDOM @ DYT

http://designyoutrust.com/2010/08/25/words-of-wisdom/ and http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/words-of-wisdom-18-pics and http://www.decadentlifestyle.net/2010/08/10/words-of-wisdom/

^ hunter s. thompson. the godfather of gonzo (and a quote that makes me grin). combine beautiful portraiture with words of “wisdom” (depending on who you are and where your values lie, these aren’t necessarily the wisest quotes in the world). these would make a great set of posters for a lounge or bedroom.

CULTURAL NORMS IN JP @ DYT

http://designyoutrust.com/2010/08/26/20-eye-opening-cultural-norms-in-japan/ and http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/20-eyeopening-cultural-norms

^ “proof of being there”.

i have never been to japan (in fact have never been anywhere but melbourne), but this would potentially be quite useful to check out before i went. some of the stuff that goes on as a social norm there is a little eyebrow-raising… in a cute way? something about the culture in general is kinda cute to me anyway. must be all the hello kitty and giant cartoon eyes stamped all over everything.

CANDY MOSAICS @ THE BERRY

http://theberry.com/2010/06/17/candy-mosaics-20-photos/

a candy mosaic 16 Candy mosaics (20 photos)

i can’t actually find any reference as to who made these, or when, or where, or why.. but whoever did it (and i can’t tell what candy that is either? looks vaguely like m&ms and then looks like the candy from the necklaces) needs to get a pat on the back. imagine how long it would have taken to meticulously plan this out and then execute it? ridiculous! and edible! yay!

LEGO RECREATIONS @ MOMA

http://www.moma.org/explore/inside_out/2010/08/20/five-and-a-few-for-friday-i-lego-moma/ and http://niemann.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/02/i-lego-ny/ (this is a slightly different lego project, but v. amusing)

these guys @ moma decided to recreate famous pieces of art in lego. there’s not much more to say about that other than omgwhatasmartidea. (and if you had the will and patience, means you could own your own piece of modern art history for like, 1/2000th of the price).

CELEB PORTRAITS @ THE CHIVE

http://thechive.com/2010/08/26/rare-photos-of-some-classy-celebs-30-photos/

rare classy celeb photos 17 Rare photos of some classy celebs (30 Photos)

a collection of black and white shots of various celebs – some i’m pretty sure i’ve seen before, but also a few i haven’t. not so much “arty” but am loving the black and white/nostalgia. rita hayworth, marilyn monroe, frank sinatra and rhett butler (can’t remember his real name) feature! go have a peek. very cute.
